Home Tour Series:
Can you give a brief introduction of yourself, your home and work?
Hello! I’m Emily, homemaker at our handmade farmhouse. I love finding ways to turn a house into a home.Over at handmadefarmhouse.com I share ideas on affordable, intentional decorating, DIY projects, from-scratch recipes, and how-to make home your happy place. You can also follow along @handmade.farmhouse on Instagram.
What year was your home built and do you have any details of the history or building process you would like to share?
We took a unique route with building our home and decided to build it all ourselves. My husband is very skilled with construction and working on every inch of our home for 18 months on nights and weekends until we were able to move in. That was a big sacrifice for our little family, but our home was built with blood, sweat and tears and constructed with love. It is so special to us!
How do you define your decor style? What are your favourite types of decor?
There are so many decor styles I admire! I would describe my home style as cottage farmhouse. I love simple and clean decor, but I also love creating spaces that feel cozy and inviting and reflect the personalities of each of our family members.
What is your favourite thing about your home? Do you have a favourite room or furniture piece?
We spend most all of our time in the kitchen. I love being in the kitchen and cooking for my family. Gathering them to the table so we can talk about our day and bond with each other brings me such joy. It has also been really fun to slowly decorate over time. Our home is filled with vintage and second-hand furniture that has been given a new life.
Do you have any big future plans for your home? What is next for you or your home?
We are currently working on our yard and garden. I have a big dream to have a garden full of raised beds, and a white greenhouse for planting. We are in the process of constructing that now!
If you had one design or decor tip, what would it be?
My one tip would be to stick to what you truly love! Trends will come and go, but if you forget the rules and decorate your home in a way that feels happy and welcoming to you each day, that will never go out of style and you won’t feel a desire to be constantly changing things. Home is such a powerful place to be when it is your haven.
Do you have a business or social media tip you can give to all those who want to start a blog or home decor business?
If you’re considering starting a business involving social media and home decor, I would suggest staying true to yourself! Don’t focus too much on growing a following each day, but rather on the connections you can make with other like-minded souls from all over the world. That aspect of this work has been my greatest blessing and joy!
