We love to test out recipes...especially around the holidays! We both love make gingerbread for the Christmas season! Britt loves making cozy mug huggers and Deb usually takes on a whole village. Deb's favourite gingerbread Village Recipe
Every year my family enjoys making a gingerbread village for our home. I thought I would share my favourite recipe with all of you. As much as I love making gingerbread every year, I am not much of a gingerbread lover.... until I found this recipe!! It is honestly the yummiest recipe ever and I dare you to try and only have one cookie! I hope you enjoy my favourite all time Classic Gingerbread Cookies.
- 2 1/4 cups white flour
- 2 tsp ground ginger
- 1-1/2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/2 tsp ground clove
- 1 cup light brown sugar
- 1/4 tsp table salt
- 10 tablespoons softened butter
- 1/4 cup molasses
- 1/2 tsp white vinegar
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- sugar to sprinkle on top

- In a medium bowl, combine the flour, ginger, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and salt.
- Using a mixer, beat the brown sugar and butter on medium speed until fluffy, a minute or so. Add the molasses, egg, white vinegar and vanilla and beat on medium speed until smooth.
- With the mixer on low speed, gradually add the dry ingredients, beating just until combined.
- Place dough on a sheet of parchment paper and cover with flour , then fold the parchment paper to make a package for each portion. Refrigerate for at least an hour.
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Prepare baking sheets by lining them with clean parchment paper .
- Cut out the cookies using a cookie cutter of your choice. Place cookies on prepared cookie sheets, leaving several inches between cookies.
- Sprinkle the cookies with the coarse sugar and bake them for 8-10 minutes. For my tiny stars, I only cooked them for 4 minutes.
- Remove the baking sheets from the oven and place cookies on a cooling rack!
Although I have never personally used a template for making my gingerbread village's, this template from Better Homes and Gardens is perfect! To print it just click on the image so that it opens in a new screen and print it from there.

Britt's Favourite Mug hugger recipe
Adding the extra touches at Christmas Time is what can make things so special! That's why I love to make Gingerbread Mug Huggers to accompany my lattes! I have been searching for a delicious recipe that also works perfect for constructing these cute little houses and I finally found one!
I found a recipe from Sally's Baking Addiction and then I tweaked things a bit to create a recipe I love!
- 2/3 cup salted butter (room temperature)
- 3/4 cup Demerara Brown Sugar (can use brown sugar but I love the molasses flavour this sugar provides)
- 2/3 cup Molasses
- 1 large egg
- 3 1/2 cups flour
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 tbsp. ginger
- 2 tsp. cardamom
- 1 tbsp. cinnamon
1. In a mixer combine butter, brown sugar and egg and mix for approximately 2 minutes.
2. Mix dry ingredients in a separate bowl and then slowly add to butter mixture.
3. Batter needs to chill before baking. I prefer to wrap the gingerbread batter in plastic wrap (squish it slightly flat so that it's easier to work with when you remove it from the fridge) and leave it overnight. I left the gingerbread dough 3 days before baking.
4. When you are ready to make the cookies remove from the fridge and let it warm up for 1-3 hours. Roll out the dough and begin cutting shapes.
5. Bake at 320 degrees for approximately 5 minutes. The trick is to pull the cookies out as soon as they are holding their shape. To test if the cookie is done gently touch the cookie and if the outside feels slightly firm the cookie is done. DO NOT wait for the cookie to turn a darker brown.
*** The time to bake the cookie all depends on the size and thickness of the cutout.
Royal Icing Recipe
This recipe is from my sweet friend Carrie - A Carrie'd Affair Blog
- 3 egg whites
- Approximately 5 cups icing sugar
- 1 tsp Vanilla
Beat egg whites until they form soft peaks. Add icing sugar until you have a thick consistency. If the icing is too thick then it can't pipe out of the bag, too thin and the royal icing won't work for constructing. My best advice to slowly add the icing sugar until you get the proper consistency.
Add the vanilla part way thru adding the icing sugar.
For a few years I have been cutting the houses out all by hand with a butter knife. I would just make the dough thicker so that I wasn't actually constructing a house with 4 walls. Rather, the cookie was thick enough to just sit on the rim of the mug.
BUT....I have found these actual mug hugger cookie cutters and they are awesome!!
This cookie cutter is so easy to use and the houses are way easier to assemble than I thought. One tip is that if the rim of your mug is thin then slightly pinch together the cut out either before baking or immediately after you pull them out of the oven!
If you want to make a lot of these you can make the dough thicker and simply use the front of the house...I call this the cheater method, but they are still just as cute and delicious! You can also different shapes like Christmas Trees and Stars and then add a cut out to fit over the mug!
These mug huggers will have your guests feeling extra special! Or it's the perfect treat for yourself...because these taste sooooo good!
