Grace in my space
Can you give a brief introduction of yourself, your home and work?
I’m Sarah Symonds! Former Director of Digital Marketing turned stay at home mom, turned author and blogger.I am a follower of Jesus and saved by God’s grace. I am a wife to an amazing man. Momma to my two little loves. And an avid coffee lover.
I take great joy in authoring and running a Michigan based home decor, DIY, lifestyle blog called Grace In My Space. I focus on interior design, home styling and budget friendly projects for the everyday home. My goal is to inspire Haven Makers daily while seeking to inspire women to love themselves and their home with grace.
What year was your home built and do you have any details of the history or building process you would like to share?
Our home was built in the late 90s. The original owners built it themselves and also added two additions later. They raised their family of 5 here before selling it to us to be closer to their adult children. In the process, they dug out what is now the pond, finding an artesian well that is the headwaters to a major river in Michigan. The house sits on a hill that was created by raising the elevation with the dirt dug from the pond. They later added a guest house on to the pole barn which we are currently remodeling.
How do you define your decor style? What are your favourite types of decor?
I tend to lean towards a modern farmhouse/country cottage. I like neutrals that can be cozied up with pops of colour. Natural earthy elements are my favourite accents like pottery, rich wood tones and stone.
What is your favourite thing about your home? Do you have a favourite room or furniture piece?
I love that our country cottage home is its own little sanctuary, nestled into 39 acres of woods. We have large windows in every room that connect us to nature and let in natural sunlight. We spend the most time in our living room, which serves both as a formal gathering space as well as everyday living room.
Do you have any big future plans for your home? What is next for you or your home?
After two years of remodeling almost every room in our home, we are focusing on the guest house. Taking it from a cabin with knotty pine walls to a more modernized gathering space.
We are excited to also invest time in the outdoors to make outdoor living more enjoyable.
If you had one design or decor tip, what would it be?
Stop doing the same thing you’ve always done with negative results. So often I see people who are frustrated with their homes because they are stuck in a rut, scared to try something new, or are constantly following design trends that don’t fit their style.
I have a simple 10 step process, outlined in my book, that helps people take a step back from their normal attempts at decorating to teach them how to create a space that they will love in the end!
Do you have a business or social media tip you can give to all those who want to start a blog or home decor business?
Blogging for business is not a hobby. It is a full time job. It can be difficult too, essentially, work for free for months or even years to get a blog up and running. So people tend to treat blogging like a hobby. However, if you ever want it to be successful as a source of income, then full time hours and monetary investment must go into it, just like any start-up business.
