Will you be hosting a Holiday gathering this year? Even if we don’t host our families main Christmas Dinner we still often have smaller gatherings or find ourselves hosting at some point. To help you out this holiday season, we wanted to give you a few options for hosting family and friends from casual appetizer events to your formal Christmas Dinners.
Britt loves having company over for brunch as it’s her favorite kind of meal. She loves the casual nature and that it’s an easier meal to prepare for! Of course brunch means latte’s, which is what Britt’s friends probably request the most when they come over!
Christmas Latte Recipe
- 1 part Milk
- 2 parts Crème Liquor (Bailey’s)
- ½ part Crème de Menthe Liquor
This recipe can also be used for drip coffee as well! You can skip the milk if you are using regular coffee and add whip cream on top for an extra splurge!
Setting the table for brunch is usually much more casual – 1 plate, napkins and simple glasses for juice! Britt likes to keep the table simple because her table is so narrow that large centrepieces just get in the way. Rather, she styles the space around the table with Christmas vibes to give her home that cozy Christmas feel that everyone loves this time of year! It does help that the Christmas Tree is only a few feet from the dinning room table as well.
Deb likes to add lots of natural elements and texture into her table setting as well. Mix those with pretty french antiques and you have the perfect combination.
the girl's Favourite Brunch Menu
Some favorite brunch items that we love to serve:
- French Toast
- Back Bacon
- Breakfast Sausages
- Hashbrowns (Britt loves the simple frozen hashbrown patties you buy)
- Fresh Fruit
- Feta & Spinach Quiche done in a cast iron pan
Deb's Favorite Spinach & Feta Quiche
- 100 g pine nuts
- 5 large free-range eggs
- 300 g feta cheese
- 50 g Cheddar cheese
- dried oregano
- 1 lemon
- olive oil
- 1 knob of unsalted butter
- 400 g baby spinach
- 1 x 270 g pack of filo pastry
- cayenne pepper
- grated nutmeg
- Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F
- Toast the pine nuts in a frying pan over a medium heat for 1 to 2 minutes, or until golden stirring occasionally.
- Crack the eggs into a large mixing bowl, crumble in the feta, then grate in the grated cheese. Add a pinch of black pepper and a couple of pinches of dried oregano.
- Finely grate in the lemon zest, drizzle in a little oil, then toss in the toasted pine nuts. Mix well.
- Melt the butter in a frying pan over a medium heat with a drizzle of oil, add the spinish making sure to stir regularly until wilted.
- Lay a piece of parchment paper out on a clean work surface, rub lightly with oil and scrunch up, then flatten out again into an ovensafe frying pan.
- Arrange 4 sheets of filo in a large rectangle on the parchment paper.
- Rub the filo with a little olive oil, sprinkle with sea salt, pepper and a pinch of cayenne pepper. Repeat until you have 3 layers.
- Stir the wilted spinach into the egg mixture, then grate in half the nutmeg and mix well.
- Pour in the spinach mixture and spread out evenly, then fold the filo up over the filling to cover.
- Place the pan over a medium heat for 2 minutes, just to get the bottom cooking, then transfer to the top shelf of the oven for 18 to 20 minutes, or until golden and crisp. Serve warm and enjoy!
Britt's Yummy Crepe Recipe
Another favorite recipe that Britt often gets asked for is her crepe recipe. She has modified a recipe from an old 4-H cookbook.
In a blender combine 4 eggs and then fill up to the 2 cup mark on the blender with milk. Melt 2 tbsp. butter. While the blender is going slowly add the melted butter so that is doesn’t curdle the milk. Add 1 tbsp. white sugar, dash of salt. Gentle blend all ingredients. Begin adding flour (approx. 1 cup) but add flour until the batter covers the back of a spoon, but is about the consistency of heavy cream.
1/4 c. sugar
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 cup Egg Nog
1 oz Rumchata
Cinnamon Sticks to garnish
Wet the rim of the glass with water and dunk it in the sugar and cinnamon. Add the Rumchata and Egg Nog together.
Formal Christmas Ideas
Now, we want to give you some ideas if you are looking to put on a more formal style dinner. One of the easiest tips we can give you for creating an elegant table of any style is LAYERS! Layering textures and patterns is a great rule of thumb to follow when setting your table. Start with a table cloth or table runner. When Deb created a table at South Centre Mall she layered a Scarf with faux garland down the centre of the table.
Add Some Glow
Cozy ambiance is such a great thing to be able to offer your guest. One of the easiest ways to add ambiance is with candles or twinkle lights. Real or faux candles are a great option, we recommend not using scented candles on your table because it doesn’t lend to a good eating experience. However, you know our favourite way to add that ambiance is with twinkle lights!! Especially after the meal is done you can dim the lights and the twinkle lights will provide that perfect light for lots of laughs or family games.
Setting the table
If you will be serving more than 1 course layer your plates and honestly you would get no judgement from us if you used plastic or paper plates. There are some awesome disposable plates out there now that are very realistic! Or on the opposite end this is that time of year to pull out your mom or Grandma’s china! If you don’t have enough settings for all of your guests mix things up. Mixing styles of plates or cutlery can look great.
This time of year we love incorporating fresh greens! Whether it be adding a fresh greens centrepiece, simple cedar sprigs on the plate setting or even adding greenery to your chandelier.

While we love creating beautiful spaces at the end of the day it’s about creating a space that suits your family and creating an environment that they can relax and enjoy themselves in. If your family loves dressing up and having a formal meal together then embrace that. However, if your family would rather show up in their pyjamas and play board games don’t waste your time setting a fancy table! This time of year is about spending it with the people you enjoy the most. So as a host provide an environment that allows you to get the most out of that time!
